The Process
Wanting to draw influence from my Māori heritage - taonga tuku iho, I decided to create a concept for a gym, yoga and wellness spa named Haumanu. Haumanu translates to 'restore health' in Te Reo Māori. I had the idea for yoga balancing stones being used in the logo while incorporating Nga koru into the design. The concept of using Koru in the design was chosen as they often represent new life, growth, strength and peace.
For the typography of 'Haumanu' I went with Bodoni Moda as I thought the serifs at the end of the a's looked similar to the koru design and while also giving a professional and elegant feel. For 'Gym, Yoga and Spa' I went with Lato. Simple but effective.
My main colour choice would be a cream colour. A calming colour often found in wellness spa's as well as green, a colour often associated with growth.
